Founders often assume real UX research requires a dedicated researcher, a recruiting panel, and weeks of runway they don’t have. Most of the value of research comes from talking to five to eight of the right people with sharp questions — not from the size of the operation around it.

Recruit From Your Own Funnel First

The fastest, cheapest source of research participants is people already in your funnel — recent signups, users who churned last month, people who abandoned checkout. They’re easier to recruit than cold panel participants and their feedback is directly relevant to decisions you’re already facing.

Ask About Behavior, Not Opinions

“Would you use this feature?” gets you polite guesses. “Walk me through the last time you tried to solve this problem” gets you real behavior. We structure every session around specific past actions rather than hypothetical future intent, because people are far more reliable narrators of what they’ve already done.

Five Conversations Beat Zero Every Time

Waiting for budget to run a “proper” study with 20+ participants often means shipping a decision with zero research behind it instead. Five focused conversations, done well, surface the majority of usability issues that matter — perfect research delayed indefinitely helps nobody.

Research doesn’t need a big budget to change a roadmap. It needs someone willing to ask a sharp question and actually listen to the answer.
